Thanks! Would love to hear how you've been using LiDAR in your research.

Family imprint reveals basin-wide patterns of Amazon forest embolism resistance - Nature Communications The Amazon faces worsening droughts, yet little is known about large-scale variation in the physiological limits of Amazon trees. Here, the authors reveal family-level conservatism in embolism resista...

Very happy to see this paper out! Led by Julia Tavares, we show biogeographical patterns in embolism resistance for Amazonian trees:

Today's Tuesday seminar was an entertaining and insightful talk from @thisanna.bsky.social about #Amazonian #Wetlands and how to measure the biodiversity within them! 🇧🇷

I'll try to pull the presentation recording into a externally accessible platform. What hyperspectral sensor are you using? My experience with them is not the greatest in terms of usability.

Title:
SOME GRAMMATICAL VOICES FOR USE IN SCIENTIFIC WRITING

ACTIVE VOICE
e.g.
Our team collected samples and then we tested them.

CLICKBAIT VOICE
e.g.
We collected some samples...
You won't believe what happened next!

PASSIVE VOICE
e.g.
Samples were collected and tested.

HAIKU VOICE
e.g.
Quiet science lab.
Workers arrive with samples.
The testing begins.

PASSIVE-AGGRESSIVE VOICE
e.g. We did all the collecting and testing.
No need to thank us.
Just doing our job.

CONSPIRACY VOICE
e.g.
Mysterious "Samples" were harvested and covertly "tested" by so-called scientists.

Would you like to work with us on filling tree biodiversity and biomass knowledge gaps in the Brazilian Amazon? Are you an expert in tropical botany/plant ecology and knows or want to learn remote sensing? Then this job is for you!

"Dramatic reductions in primary forest loss in Brazil and Colombia coincide with political changes"

Brazil lost 36% less primary forest in 2023 than in 2022, hitting its lowest level since 2015.

Bar chart showing primary forest loss declining from 1.5 million hectares in 2022 to only about 0.5 million in 2013, growing back to more than 1.5 million in 2022, and declining to around 1 million in 2023

Hey did you know primary forest loss in Brazil decreased by ***36%*** in 2023 relative to 2022, hitting its lowest level since 2015?

It's not their fault really - our date/time system is just shit for scientific analysis. 'Yes, let us have months with different numbers of days, and also let us make year length vary every five years. Ah, let us also add different time zones and introduce daylight saving/summer time there too'. 🤬
