Brazil’s unexpected entry into the war completely reversed the meaning of the saying - now “a cobra vai fumar” means something will absolutely happen.

“A cobra vai fumar” is Portuguese for “the snake will smoke” - akin to saying “when pigs fly” or “when hell freezes over.” Brazilians doubted they’d enter the war at all, and when they finally did, the expeditionary force chose the idiom as their symbol.

The main reason I wanted to write about this was to nod to Brazil’s history as an Allied power during the war, though there’s one detail I wasn’t able to cram into the piece - it’s the logo of Brazil’s expeditionary force during the war: the smoking snake.
