Saving the internet? The limits of platform power amid the techlash | Business and Politics | Cambridge Core Saving the internet? The limits of platform power amid the techlash

The findings of the paper suggest that the political power of platforms may have been overstated. Future research should pay closer attention to the interaction between platforms' (infra)structural power and their lobbying strategies. You can find the full paper here:
doi.org/10.1017/bap....

18.11.2024 15:04 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

... moreover, the characteristics of competing interest groups matter: The French SME-dominated creative sector was much more successful in credibly criticizing the exploitative practices of platforms and demanding fair remuneration than large German media corporations.

18.11.2024 15:04 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Focusing on the French and German debates, I find that...

... the techlash does indeed limit platform power: in France, the public image of Big Tech was much more critical than in Germany, providing a less fertile bonding surface for the frames pushed by the platforms.

18.11.2024 15:04 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Frame stickiness is thus a key scope condition for successful platform outside lobbying. Particularly, the public's preexisting beliefs and competition from other interest groups can pose high hurdles. To show this, I combine process-tracing and a quantitative analysis of Twitter and newspaper data.

18.11.2024 15:04 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Examining the public debate on the EUCD, I find that (a) platforms do indeed need to actively build alliances through outside lobbying, framing, and conflict expansion, and that (b) platforms’ success depends critically on whether their frames β€œstick” with the public.

18.11.2024 15:04 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

While previous research suggests an anti-regulatory alliance between platforms and the public, I argue that recent scandals have shifted public opinion against Big Tech. Amid this techlash, platforms cannot rely on an automatic alliance, but must actively shape and mobilize public opinion.

Back in the good old days of Twitter, the European Copyright Directive of 2019 (EUCD) was a hot topic. Some users thought it would stifle free speech, while others believed it would stop Big Tech from exploiting artists. How did platforms shape this debate and why were they (un)successful? 🧡
