These results highlight the key role of spontaneous community-driven behaviour change, and the importance of risk communication and community engagement in outbreak control.
21.01.2026 15:13 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Model results aligned with post-outbreak survey data (ERAS 2023) reporting that ~46% of MSM reduced sexual partners during that outbreak.
21.01.2026 15:13 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Instead, the decline was best explained by widespread behavioural change, adopted by ~half of MSM, *independently of individual risk level*.
This prevented an estimated ~70% of potential cases during summer 2022.
We found that vaccination and infection-induced immunity alone could not explain the early downturn.
21.01.2026 15:13 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0We used a network model of mpox transmission among MSM, grounded in sexual behaviour data, to disentangle the drivers: post-exposure vaccination, immunity among highly active individuals, behavioural adaptations.
