So almost all your popular genre-establishing magical girls were created by men. It also kind of makes sense with the direct inspirations of the genre being in series like Bewitched, which had pretty broad appeal.

Yep! Many early magical girl series were anime productions first, and that was a heavily male-led industry, I'd say even more so than manga. There were a lot of male shoujo manga authors as well, and a lot of early female shoujo manga authors I know wrote romance works in a mundane setting.

I mentioned in the server because I didn't know how many more I would find, but I think that Hime-chan's Ribbon (1990) and those Pierrot manga adaptations are the earliest ones I see that everyone would agree is magical girl, with Tokimeki Tonight (1982) if you count it too.

YMMV on it though because I think the manga is fairly different from the anime and may not strictly be a magical girl title (haven't read it though).

Adding onto this, Magical Emi and Pastel Yumi are both by Arai Kiyoko. That's a definite one, lots of info about her available. I'm not seeing anything mainstream before these Pierrot-related magical girls, but digging deeper may reveal more. Persia is the only one that was an existing work.

Oh, I misread, but yeah it's not Miracle Girls either, heh. I'll dig a bit more when I'm on PC, too hard to do it on mobile.

There may be earlier ones than this, and I'm sure there are also earlier ones by authors who are a bit more well-known, too. But it is definitely, definitely not Sailor Moon, lol. Maybe ask Tumblr user showamagicalgirls?

It's definitely not SM. Creamy Mami's art (though not story) is credited to someone named Kitagawa Yuuko, who I'd guess is a woman (not much into in English though, I'd have to hunt around to see if a JP search has more), and We Love Persia! is by Aonuma Takako (similarly little English info).

I see this going around a lot, so I tried it too. 👀 This list would likely change a little bit every day, but it's a solid sample.

It's not in a particular order per se, but you know Digimon World and Monster Rancher 2 will always come to mind first.

(I keep them separate because you're technically not supposed to merge chats according to Twitch rules. Would it ever really be a problem? Unlikely, but I try to eliminate all possible issues ahead of time. :v)

I could make the chatboxes even smaller, but I want them to remain legible on mobile. The YouTube overlay code is pretty wonky, so making the font bigger tends to break it. Otherwise, I could make the boxes smaller and the font bigger. P:

Overall verdict: biscuits mid (but more recognizably a biscuit than I expected from looking at them), sandwiches pretty good, and something about it does definitely remind me more of what I'm used to ("Southern fried" chicken is extremely popular and common here, but it varies in quality).
