I'm watching Red Desert (1964) and i cannot believe that this movie wants me to believe that Richard Harris was born in Trieste and grew up in Bologna lol

SG Goodman? is this band named after Dwyane Wade or something?

Yeah you can tell that Lumet came up as a stage/teleplay director. He mostly avoids it but sometimes it creeps in.

The times I liked the movie least were when it felt the most "theatrical:" Jurors 6 & 7 both making their case to Juror 8 in the bathroom as he dabs his face, Lee J Cobb playing to the black row of the house, each of the men carefully blocked as they turn their backs on Juror 10's racist tirade.

I felt the same way watching Dog Day Afternoon (1975) but Lumet's movies feel distinctly modern (rather than classic) to me. I don't know enough about movie history to know if he was simply ahead of his time or if modern movies have modeled themselves off Lumet's style.

My favorite moment in the movie might be after the second vote (which Fonda sits out) goes 10 to 1. Juror 3 goes after Juror #5 for allegedly changing his vote before Juror 9 reveals that he was the one who switched. The dead-center close-up of Juror 9 (the first of the movie I think) really pops

take the second shot of the movie: Lumet could have just shown us the final frame as establishing shot of the courtroom of the murder trial but instead the camera follows three different guys as they make their way though the second story of the courthouse. great shit!

12 Angry Men (1957): There is always the risk when adapting a play (and 12 Angry Men counts as a play imo) to just set down the camera & then let the actors go to work. Its really impressive that this was Lumet's feature debut in that he really uses the tools of the medium to make this a true MOVIE

Bluesky needs a "turn off reposts" option. Some of you are friends with a bunch of idiots.

yeah every part of the movie has that "dumb but mostly well-meaning criminals make irrevocable mistakes" vibe that I most associate with the Coens

biggest issue with a buffet is that it limits your seating if you are already tight on space. Plus, some "fancier" venues don't offer it (ours only offered plated dinner service, for example). But it is cheaper if you can get it!

the adventures of Louis & Veronique went a little broad (although i loved the idea of the German couple humoring all their obvious lies as a lark) but i will watch Jeanne Moreau stumble across Paris scored by Miles Davis any day of the week. Favorite shot was the super stylized interrogation scene

i almost always order the pasta because its easy to do well at scale, whereas it is quite hard to make 60 chicken dinners to be served at the same time without overcooking them

Elevator to the Gallows (1958): The plotting of this movie is positively coens-esque. So much in fact that i think the bros should reconcile and then remake it. A man kills his mistress's husband but his plan to escape is foiled after he gets stuck in an elevator? I mean come on

sort of adjacent to today's male romance discourse: my mind was mildly blown when Hsiao Kang goes to the phone dating service and it turns out in early 90s Taipei they paid men to answer young women's phone calls. pretty crazy!

Rebels of the Neon God (1992): My first Tsai Ming-Liang. What a pleasure to watch. It got a little melodramatic during Ah Kuei's last visit to Ah Tze's apartment but otherwise rock solid. My favorite shot is probably Ah Kuei calling the dating line framed by the skates at the roller rink.

I THINK this basically means that VA Tech is paying ODU extra to only come play in Blacksburg rather than alternating with Norfolk??
