The need for things to keep escalating means that the final showdown is a little more action-heavy than the movie is built to handle. And the last coda on the train is pretty predicable. But overall I had a pretty good time!

Favorite Shot: This nice little crane move past the neon sign of the bar

Red Rock West (1993): We need to go back to making twisty neo-noirs for dumb guys. The plotting in this one is sublime (down-on-his-luck drifter gets mistaken for a contract killer, makes off with the payment then runs afoul of the real hitman) & John Dahl is competent behind the camera. JT Walsh!!

It brings me no pleasure to report that tonight's wolves pick is Raptors +180. Don't have a good feeling about this one

One quibble: Why did Driver and Garfield do Portuguese accents? Canonically they are speaking Portuguese not English, just have them talk normal imo. Neeson wisely avoids it.

Favorite shot: Whoever did the location scouting and found this crazy rock/cave deserves a big raise. Absolutely stunning

Kichijirō is such a great character. I think i might also be a coward in this situation! But man what if you trampled and your whole family wouldn't. But the fact that he keeps coming back over and over for one more reconciliation is so good. The final one is really touching

Silence (2016): Gorgeous moment-to-moment, frame-to-frame. I was worried it might just be a depiction of noble suffering over the first two hours but then Liam Neeson shows up. Obviously there is a bunch of suffering but it really kicks into gear. My wife is v catholic so a lot of it really hits

Wolves allowing a 17-point lead with 3 minutes left to get into clutch time with 33 seconds left to pad the clutch time wins. Chess not checkers.

just trying to make sure that I am interpreting the chart correctly: Let's say VA has 100k students graduate in 2025. Does this mean that with net migration in/out that there are 59k 2025 grads living in VA in 2026? And if MN only graduates 100k students in 2025, there are 107k 2025 grads in 2026?

yeah Ms. 45 was really promising so I tried putting on some of his later stuff... still not all the way there imo

Favorite shot 2: Frank White stumbling through the nearly-abandoned subway station after meeting Detective Bishop on the train. Great camera movement and the evocative bright red paint of the columns

Favorite shot 1: When the waiter outside the mob poker game ushers in Joey (Paul Calderon), the hand-held camera glides past the waiter as if in Joey's POV, but then the camera stops and Joey enters the frame from behind

King of New York (1990): Did Ferrara do his casting by walking through the Do the Right Thing (1989) set? Good strategy.
Stylish but repetitive, much like Ms. 45 (1981). NYC gangsters in the early 90s had putrid operational security. No body guards, no safe houses, no pat-downs or weapon searches.
