Walking out of the screening room, I thought THE BRIDE! was TURRIBLE! But at the same time, there's something about it that softened that original assessment of the movie.

I cover events at indie theaters up there from here. And I show up on occasion. I did 2 events in Boston last month. I am moderating a Q&A up there this month. I write about local festivals, too. I do not have to be IN Boston or be FROM Boston to cover these things. It's provencial bullshit.

I don't recall Brian or Chaz demanding that I live in Chicago during the 11 years I wrote for Roger's site. So, what's the difference here?

It confuses me how readers think that I, the film critic, should live in Boston and be a Bostonian (and White--let's not forget that). Movies are not local news. What the hell does my location have to do with me doing my job? If I were the sports guy, I could see the argument. But movies? Nah, fam.

I say "youse" because of the Jersey in me, and "y'all" because practically every-fucking-body in my family older than my Mom came from the South.

OLIVER! is on cable now. I once thought that was the WORST Best Picture Oscar winner (that's no longer true). Yes, I've seen every single winner. Flipped by as the Artful Dodger was singing "Consider Yourself." When they showed us this dreck in fifth grade, I thought it was "consider yourself a ho."

I've written articles I look back at and go "damn, I fucked that up" or "geez, I could have done that a little better." But, I've yet to put my name under something I'm ashamed of writing. I've turned down pitches that misrepresented me. I don't know how some writers sell their souls for a byline.

I hated it when it came out too (and still dislike it), but this is a great article about BLUE VELVET and the choices Isabella Rossellini made in that film. A must-read.

I'm too old to have any nostalgia for THE LION KING. Outside of its opening sequence and bitchy RoarPaul's Drag Race runner-up, Scar, I haven't much love for the movie. But Pinocchio scared the crap out of me nearly 50 years ago when I first saw it. So that's where my vote went. Vote your heart!

I did the Q&A with the director at last year's Newport Film Festival. I can't review the movie until it comes out in Boston on 3/20, but I liked it a lot.
