Alkaloids are associated with increased microbial diversity and metabolic function in poison frogs Caty et al. demonstrate that alkaloids play a role in structuring the skin microbial community of dendrobatid poison frogs. They provide evidence that this is partly due to the ability of some microbial taxa to metabolize alkaloids.
