I agree with you about the US system. My own student experience was math and accuracy > wonder.

I take a bit of offense at that. It takes a skilled educator to blend the awe and wonder with the scientific principles. When done well, they enhance each other and both grow.

There are many of us doing a good job at it and there would be more of us if education paid better and was funded better.

Truly. I wish we could too. Physics is also so often taught as an optional class taken up select students. This divide is a big reason why I chose to teach 7th and 8th grade. I get to live longer in the awe and wonder and reach all students.

Hah. My comment to students is often the inverse, that math often exists to describe and model what we observe in science.

I taught 8th graders about water turning into hydronium and hydroxide today. Then acids and bases. Then the pH scale.

Then I pulled out a bajillion expired pH strips from deep in a classroom drawer and told them we’re going to dip them in whatever food they bring to school.

I am pumped.

I’m in K-12 but a detailed rubric ahead of time, somehow acknowledged by students does a lot of legwork. I don’t have to fight over plagiarism for garbage AI work if it already earned a 35%. Same with kids making an underhanded religious point about evolution. Tight rubric wins.
