Getting back into fiction in my late 20s, I didn’t know where to start so I went with Pulitzer, Booker, NYT top 10 stuff and mostly 😴. But after The Savage Detectives, I wanted more Bolaño, which led me to New Directions, indies and translated fiction. That’s mostly where I live now

Tyler would never be seen with a shoddy lineup like that. Embarrassing for the Herro family really

I have an unreasonable hatred of movie tie-in covers. Even ones that are the normal cover with a “Now a Major Motion Picture” badge

I want the cover to be Christian but subtle. How about the tree’s shadow being Jesus on the cross

Would love to hear a Microsoft designer explain how they decided that if you try to follow up on your own email in an email thread in Outlook, it should have you just send that email to yourself

Yoko Tawada Is A Genius In Any Language | Defector There’s always a song to sing, but first a silence must be created for the song to be born in. — Yoko Tawada, Paul Celan and the Trans-Tibetan Angel The best argument I can make for why I like…

Cover of Dalkey Archive edition of The Terrible Twos. A closeup of a Santa Clause doll’s face

Look, the plot—the picaresque, mumbo-jumbo, always-mutating plot of The Terrible Twos is, yes, fun—but it’s the prose, the energy, the commentary, and, yes, the prescience of the novel that makes it so engrossing and fun and terrifying. This is a book that begins: “By Christmas, 1980, the earth had had enough and was beginning to send out hints,” a book that has the American President meeting with the American Nazi Party in the Oval Office, a book that has one character comment to another, on the election of Reagan, that “It feels good to be a white man again with him in office.” The satire’s prescience is painful, but Reed’s wisdom—the ballast of this ever-shifting picaresque—anchors the commentary in a deeper condemnation: It has always been this way. Ishmael Reed seems so prescient because we keep failing the past. Same as it ever was.

No. 10 - The Terrible Twos (1982) by Ishmael Reed

LOVED IT! A blistering and prescient satire of American capitalism, power & politics. But Reed’s prescience comes from knowing America’s history as @biblioklept.bsky.social writes biblioklept.org/2017/12/13/a... (excerpt below)
