It’s hard. I served for 22 years in the Army, and them for quite a long time in other agencies. I always have to remind myself that when it comes to a military affairs, it doesn’t matter an iota what I know or don’t know.

Nostradamus
YouTube video by Al Stewart - Topic Nostradamus

Past, Present and Future blew my mind when it came out. Every song on the album is awesome from Old Admirals right through to Nostradamus. I was just listening a few days ago. For me, it’ll always be fresh!

A couple of weeks ago, a Merkin flew into our hen house and couldn’t figure out how to get out. I wasn’t in a position to take any snaps. It was pretty exciting. The chickens all disappeared!

This little hawk lit on my bird feeder this morning in western Oregon. I’m not an expert, but I believe he’s a Cooper’s Hawk. Bertie was watching on his TV set!

I love thumbing through old copies of Punch. This amusing cartoon comes from the issue of 27/6/1917. Much of the magazine's humour is specific to that era, but this one will be recognizable to almost all professional soldiers. Enjoy...

β€˜Sunday Morning at Cunel’ by Harvey Dunn, 1918, #NMAH. This vivid piece shows soldiers of the 5th Division, #AEF, during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in October 1918. In this battle, US forces incurred some of their heaviest losses of the #GreatWar.

The NHL spent years trying to improve its image. It took Trump, Patel and the US mens’ team a week to ruin it all. And don’t even get me started on the way those two MoH’s were presented…

I watched the first fifteen minutes. My wife and I had planned to watch the entire speech. Trump was so repulsive and disgusting, we had to turn him off.

β€œYpres Salient at Night” by Paul Nash, 1918, #IWMCollection.

In night combat, the landscape is often lit by the weird, eerie light of star shells and flares. The artist captured this atmosphere perfectly in the painting.

It’s #InternationalWarAnimalDay, a time to honour the role animals have played in conflicts throughout history. The purple poppy commemorates all animals who served, suffered, and died in war. Draught horses Bill and Jean left the UK for France in 1914 and served throughout #WW1 with the SWB.

For Michael Howley and his family. This is a song by Runrig, who rank amongst my favourite bands. As I read Michael’s story, I couldn’t help but think of this wonderful song.

I know what that’s like. My dad was in WW2 and Korea, serving in total 24 years.

After he left the Army, we moved at least 5 times trying to find some peace for him. It ended very badly with his death. He never found the peace he fought for. Maybe that’s part of why this story touches me so deeply

This is the story of one Tommy and his struggling family. He survived the war, at least, physically. But he of (probably) influenza at the gates of the new world.

What a tragic story of duty and sacrifice. This old sweat gave his all. Thank you for keeping his memory alive.

I follow the Western Front Ass’n on youtube. I just finished an absolute master class on Sir Douglas Haig and his command philosophy. Phil Watson is the lecturer and he is nothing short of outstanding. The quality is that of a staff college seminar.

Such a powerful image. For me, this sculpture somewhat recalls Hilda Rix Nicholas’ iconic painting β€œPro Humanitate” from 1917.

I’m about 2/3 of the way through β€œOrdeal of Victory”, which is a magnificent book. I’m sure many of you are familiar with it. Highly recommended! To my mind, it’s really stood the test of time since first being published in 1963. #booksky #WWI #fww #fwwhist #DouglasHaig

For #blackandwhitewednesday we’ve found this lovely snap from #WW1. It’s from a collection of photographs belonging to Sgt. Harry Coates, 2nd Battalion, Welsh Regiment, and was taken in France in 1916. We love that the soldier in the centre has his accordion with him! #music #firstworldwar #archive
