David Gauke was a Secretary of State as recently as 2019.

His eloquence and clarity in making the case against leaving the ECHR reminds us just how far the Conservative Party has fallen.

Thank you Jane, it's precisely the group in early mid-life that I believe would benefit most.

Citizens Advance

Hi Jane
On this theme, a plug for my Citizens Advance proposal.

After 10 years of NI contributions, the state would give people the choice to take a year of their pension as a lump sum, in exchange for retiring a year later.
The value is circa Β£12k now.

Welcome your view!

Thank you for engaging with the idea Helen, I really appreciate it.
Do sign up for updates on the website if you are interested. Lots more work to come in partnership with the @smfthinktank.bsky.social to develop the concept.

Citizens Advance

The Tories are talking home ownership today.
Predictably, their plans are based on deep cuts elsewhere.

Citizens Advance is a real alternative.
After 10 years in work, give people the choice to take 1 year of their state pension as a lump sum (Β£12k) and retire a year later πŸ‘‡

The green economy is growing, emissions are falling & air quality is improving.

There is still an immense amount of work to do to tackle climate change, but the worst thing we could do is to give up.

Proud to sign this letter, urging Kemi Badenoch not to try and dump the Climate Change Act.

The attack on a Synagogue in Manchester is an act of pure evil. Compounded by the fact today is Yom Kippur, one of the holiest days in the Jewish calendar.

I know people across Welwyn Hatfield will share my horror and want to offer their support to friends and neighbours in the Jewish community.

Renewables generate record share of electricity generation, figures show The record was partly driven by a record high share in solar generation as the UK saw its sunniest spring on record.

A testament to the potential of homegrown wind + solar power.

From April-June:
⚑️55% of our electricity came from renewables
⚑️70% of our electricity came from low-carbon sources (inc nuclear)

In one year:
🌬️Offshore wind energy grew 10%
β˜€οΈSolar energy grew 27%

Great to speak with @andrewlewinmp.bsky.social yesterday about his idea for a Citizen's Advance - having a year of state pension as a lump sum earlier in life in return for a later retirement. With early insights into @smfthinktank.bsky.social research on the issue from @jamiegollings.bsky.social

Great to be in the hall for the Chancellor's speech in Liverpool.

Her central message was that this is a Labour government committed to extending opportunities for all young people.

Through the youth guarantee at home and an ambitious youth mobility deal with the European Union.

EU must β€˜seize the opportunity’ as Chancellor calls for β€˜ambitious’ Youth mobility scheme Best for Britain has led the campaign for a reciprocal EU-UK scheme since it was first proposed by the cross-party UK Trade and Business Commission in their landmark 2023 report.

On the eve of Labour Conference, am delighted the Chancellor has reaffirmed her support for an ambitious youth mobility deal with the EU.

This would be good for young people, good for business and good for everyone who wants a closer UK/EU relationship.

Retrospectively changing the rights of people to stay in the UK isn't fair, isn't right and is certainly not the British way.
To Farage they are,"low skilled migrants."
To the majority of Brits, they are our friends and neighbours, working as teachers, carers and in small businesses.

Palestinian families are facing the horrors of famine and a daily fight to survive.
Israeli hostages have been made to suffer unimaginably by Hamas terrorists.

It is a dark time, but we must never lose the hope of securing an enduring peace. A peace that can only come with two states.

93% of our Labour Cabinet attended state schools.
It is the highest proportion in decades and (while I am happy to stand corrected), I suspect it is the highest ever.

There is much work still to do to break down class barriers and expand opportunity for all, but our government is leading by example

We will not be cowed by Elon Musk.

A man who can't win an argument with his own AI tool (yes, Grok is off for 'reprogramming' again this week) is not going to win an argument about the future of British politics.
