This research is important because it corroborates what we already knew - that when comparing the UK to peer economies, it has had a big slowdown since 2016. It does so with firm-level data and finds more EU-connected firms have sizeable shortfalls in productivity and investment compared to less.

Tackling deprivation and reversing years of unfair council funding Outdated funding formulas that penalised deprived areas for decades are being scrapped, so local people finally get the vital public services they deserve.

It's been a long time coming...today we are reconnecting council funding with deprivation ->

An excellent policy that I anticipate will bring good news to people across Welwyn Hatfield.

We're a community of contrasts and I am optimistic this change in how funding is allocated will give our local authority a much needed boost.

Great that @allymcgovern.bsky.social embracing BlueSky too!

As immigration dominates the brief this morning, hereโ€™s my two cents on the salience vs. the importance of the issue:

Essential reading from Calum Weir - on findings from some innovative polling from Labour Together.

His words
"Immigration is salient, polarising and important.
Cost of living is foundational, unifying and in some ways, even more important."

A heartfelt thank you to everyone across Welwyn Hatfield who attended and participated in Remembrance services today.

The support from the public has been exceptional.

From veterans and cadets through to brownies and cubs acting as flag bearers.

We will remember them.

Business live: Pound and borrowing costs fall after chancellor sticks to fiscal rules Investors buy UK bonds after Rachel Reeves hints at significant tax rises to fill the hole in the public finances

There was a time when opposition politicians were desperate to talk about bond yields.
That's about to change.

Borrowing costs have fallen today, because the market has confidence in the Chancellor's approach.

That's why today's press conference was important.

Am pleased Farage is making more speeches.
Every time he does, something new slips out of the bag.

Today - he is considering a cut in the minimum wage for younger workers.

I'm proud our Labour Government increased the minimum wage. You should be paid fairly for the job you do, irrespective of age.

Sheโ€™s right. She *deliberately* hacked into Harriet Harmanโ€™s website, whereas Rachel Reeves is accused of obtaining a license late by accident. I assume thatโ€™s what she means, given Badenoch is widely known for her thoughtfulness and her self-awareness.

For more than 70 years, the ECHR has protected the fundamental rights of millions of people.

I fully support our membership. Leaving would put the UK on a par with Belarus and Russia.

Farage's 'Bill' today was pure symbolism, but we have to keep making the argument for why the ECHR matters.

If we abolish stamp duty, the biggest winners will be those with the biggest houses.

If your house is worth ยฃ2million, you save ยฃ150,000. If it's ยฃ300,000 - you save nothing.

The Conservatives dedicated most of their Opposition Day to this cause in the Commons today.

Irrespective of whether she was freelancing, or speaking for the Conservative Party - Katie Lam is plain wrong.

It's unconscionable to threaten to deport hundreds of thousands of people who have Indefinite Leave to Remain in the UK.

This is not who we are as a country.

Brexit damage to our economy "to the tune of ยฃ100 billion pounds"
YouTube video by Andrew Lewin MP Brexit damage to our economy "to the tune of ยฃ100 billion pounds"

The Chancellor is absolutely right, we are poorer & economy is smaller because of Brexit.

In her words, the impact has been, "severe and long lasting."

I have been making this case for months - see clip below from May.

Now we have to accelerate progress on UK/EU reset.

Kemi Badenoch appears to be getting plaudits for a speech in which she breezily claimed to have found ยฃ47,000,000,000 in savings.

Citizens Advance

Hi Jane
On this theme, a plug for my Citizens Advance proposal.

After 10 years of NI contributions, the state would give people the choice to take a year of their pension as a lump sum, in exchange for retiring a year later.
The value is circa ยฃ12k now.

Welcome your view!

The Tories are talking home ownership today.
Predictably, their plans are based on deep cuts elsewhere.

Citizens Advance is a real alternative.
