timeslipcovers When I first read the lyrics to First Love, I just sat on my couch and bawled. It wasn't exactly the same, but the story of abandoning the piano and eventually coming back to find it quietly waiting, quietly accepting and cheering you on, touched something really deep inside. Music is one of the difficult relationships I've had in my life. It's also the hardest one to articulate, because it is inherently non-lexical. It requires communion with the soul, which, to me, has always been like grasping a hissing snake. Yoongi put that pain into words. Reading about how Yoongi patiently taught music to those kids with autism, cracked something open in my soul - a hardened walnut decades-old, containing some of my most intense pain, confusion, and outrage as a young musician who only had terrible teachers. I may have brought myself back to music, but Yoongi has dredged out the things I need to confront about my past, in their most wordless betrayal and fury, before I can even build anything good. That he helped non-verbal kids begin to find their words for the first time in their lives, feels like a metaphor for the work I'm only just beginning to do in therapy to heal this specific pain. No matter what comes, no matter the man Min Yoongi may yet become, the things he's done with the first 33 years of his life are already incredible. I am personally indebted, not just as an ARMY, but as a musician and another creative soul just trying to make the best of her time on this planet.
