And they have a much longer genealogy in the "small wars" and "policing actions" of empire. Some eerie similarities between these attacks and the British "aerial policing" of Iraq in the 1920s.

And of course, those tactics, techniques and technologies were forged in the Israeli state's racialised military and security regime directed at the Palestinians and the wider region.

There's a case to be made for thinking about how this has all travelled and been radicalised. But I think we also want to keep in mind the degree to which it was normalised and embedded into the 'low-level' operations of the imperialist system at the juridical level.

So there's arguably a certain spectacularity here, but that's a spectacularity built upon a very normalised set of juridical claims (that on some level had a bunch of state buy-in too).

They undergirded that whole system of regular, quotidian death from above by drone strike, which has - of course - been maybe the primary way in whcih imperial power stitched together the globe.

The legal arguments and architecture for what's happening in Iran now, and were deployed in relation to Gaza, really did not come out of nowhere.

The pre-emption and targetted assassination arguments might appear spectacular, but they were the workaday archiecture of the war on terror.
