We partnered with an 11-18 secondary school in Kent who were determined to eliminate adolescent illiteracy.
π24 of their students have now graduated from the programme.
πThe students gained between 2.5 years to 8 years in their reading.
πThe average gain was 5 years in 33 half-hour lessons.

3. We love hearing these success stories. But we are not surprised. Our promise to our partner schools is that the students they think canβt learn to read, will learn to read. Not only that: they will catch up rapidly β and completely.

2. All 11 students in Year 7 who were reading well behind have now caught up completely, with gains from 2.5 to 7.5 years. This cohort of students will now be able to move forward with less need for support, and more ambition in classroom learning. No child left behind π

Whose Responsibility?
It came as a shock to see a letter in the Sunday Times demanding that parents be held to account if their children do not learn to read at school. I had thought that we were making progress on suchβ¦
A common assumption is that reading is easy to teach. If that is so, why do 20% arrive at secondary school reading well behind their age?

Particularly proud of this aspect of our Ofsted inspection report: βThe school has considerably strengthened its support for pupils who are learning to read. Pupils who need additional help, including with phonics, receive this regularly. This is enabling pupils, including those who speak English as an additional language, to catch up.β
This week we saw several more students graduating from our intervention program having made several yearsβ worth of reading gains in a matter of months - sometimes even weeks.
Reading is the key to our providing properly inclusive education. Working with βThinking Readingβ has been so transformative for those who need the most support. James Murphy Funda Shibli HΓ©lΓ¨ne Galdin-O'Shea
It's this kind of impact that all the work has been for. There is so much that can be done and we are privileged to help schools to do it.

8. Before Thinking Reading Tom sat on his own during lunch. We never heard him speak. He was isolated from his peers and from the staff.
About four months into the programme - as his reading progressed - he started going to the school library. He would always say hello to the librarian.
