Talking Orioles baseball... like, all the time.

Yeah I split my thread but by every parity metric MLB is just fine.

The counterpoint is two-fold:

1) competitive balance isn't actually a problem

2) the CBT did absolutely nothing to change the level of parity in the game

👀 I haven't even started the second season. Need to get on it.

No I support. Sometimes you catch a wave and you just gotta ride it lol.

If somehow you haven't jumped on the bandwagon, these guys are incredible wealths of knowledge and distill information in really effective ways. The pod rocks, Nick has Substack *humming*, and they're also wonderfully good people on top of it all.

Could. Not. Recommend. Enough.

Appreciate you putting this thread together. All was well-said.

To be clear, worked in limiting spending. Didn't do jack for competitive balance.

The top end has never been the problem. And it's also not entirely true that there is a problem, I encourage everyone here to look at parity metrics across the major sports. Baseball is not substantially worse in any way.

But, this is the fastest path to fatter pockets, and their PR team is A1.

This is really critical for people to understand. The CBT was implemented with the exact same headline: "limiting the top teams unfair spending will create more competitive balance". It is called the competitive balance tax, after all.

And it worked! Most teams don't touch it!

Just brilliant. No notes.

Makes complete sense, thanks for the rundown!

Have read a good amount about your team model on the site but haven't seen much about the player model (certainly could've missed some). Could you run through a super high level of what inputs you're using for hitters and pitchers?

Braves about to Chayce McDermott right out of this game.

makes sense with Westy**

Feels like this path makes sense Westy. He can "almost definitely miss" the entire season with surgery, or he can try to come back and if it doesn't work, then get surgery and definitely miss the season but still make it back in time for next year. It's logical.

Coby better step up either way!

I put out a podcast a bit ago saying rather than Zac Gallen, I would rather just sign Verlander/Bassitt for a year and move on.

Here we are and, it's fine! Just fine!

In my eyes, projections agree we're at least competitive there, and >50% chance of making the playoffs either way. And, while less of it remains every day, the off-season still isn't done! Haha

Never judge the off-season until the off-season is over

(I repeat to myself in the corner while I cry in the fetal position)

He is certainly better than Jackson but if he's truly just depth, I would rather have Vasquez backing up with Strowd in the pen

05.02.2026 21:01 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

Yeah my trouble there is just the number of roster spots we're committing to infielders at that point, it jumps up to 7 guys at that point.

05.02.2026 21:00 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

Yeah I can see that for sure, and Aracena (as enticed as I am by the stuff) has a ton of reliever risk.

But, the larger question for me is just a matter of why it's being made... which presumably will resolve itself in the coming days.

As others are saying, Westy/Holliday trade flexibility is certainly what makes sense
