This is also why we should practice solidarity between different forms of art, with regards to Gen AI, and refuse slop in all its forms, at all stages of the process. According due respect to other people's work - the same respect we'd like accorded to ours - that should be the goal.

recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best. It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence relies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.

vocaloid music can be so arrestingly honest and heartfelt in a way that i think could only ever come from a synthetic voice. its an emotional barrier, except it isn't. it's *all* feeling. it can sing things we can't bear to sing ourselves. it shows us the truths that lay in hiding within artifice.

to my friends, collaborators, and everyone who listened; to the family i've found; to all of you, my constant companions - thank you for giving me the best year of my life if i can be frank for a moment - it wasn't very long ago that i wasn't sure i'd make it this far. not "making it" in the metaphorical popularity sense, but... living this long. the reasons hadn't always been there. not in the way they are now. that's the real beauty of being an artist, though! you put something small into the world, straight from your heart; people you've never met find it, let it enter their hearts, and carry it with them; and in turn, the world puts something back into you i can't thank any of you enough. certainly not as much as i feel i should. not to plagiarize and recontextualize a friend, but... a thought i'm obsessed with is that it takes seven years for your body to completely remake itself. here's to another year closer to whom i try so hard to be.
