Loving this edition! One question I'd like more insight on though: how should Nationwide clients feel about its recent takeover of Virgin Money?
And why are Nationwide's company ethos and lending policy scores so low?
Is there a way we can see the details behind particular companies' scores?

@fulhamish.bsky.social would Fulham be any lower in the table today if they hadn't signed Andersen and Smith Rowe over the summer?

Listening to News Agents @lewisgoodall.com say the Greens need to 'be better' at the media game if they want the media coverage Reform gets. I hope Lewis will read Yuval Noah Harari's Nexus to understand why we desperately need institutions that rebalance the information game toward truthfulness.

Now I've been chatting to a friend/colleague about how services are commissioned in government (or by other big funders). Are there any really good examples of commissioners embedding user-centred design thinking and methods into their work?

yes, love this! In fact I was just quoting someone from that workshop during the conversation earlier today, but had forgotten it was from that workshop! π«£ It was all about how economists estimate value all the time, and we service designers need to get better at doing the same thing!

Just chatting to a friend/colleague about how economists make assumptions and then use those assumptions to build cases for change. Got us thinking...
?? What can service designers learn from economists ??
Would love to hear what people think...

Does each government department therefore need an add-on directorate responsible for driving long-term systemic change, by bringing together the policy, operational & digital teams working within that sector already? Or do we need a centralised function working across all of govt to do this?

So Iβve started wondering -- have I got it wrong? Do ministers and senior leaders not actually see policy teams as the people responsible for driving long-term systemic change within complex systems? Is the real problem that no one within government has that mandate?

But in recent years, I havenβt seen any real drives to reform the policymaking process -- a few tweaks around the edges, sure, but not any serious approaches to enact the wholescale change that would be needed to implement a new approach. (Please do correct me if I'm wrong here!)

A core part of my theory is that government policy teams should see themselves as βstewards of complex systemsβ, and therefore policymakers should be taking approaches to problem solving rooted in continuous learning, testing, and adaptation.
