Despite their severity, these symptoms do not typically progress to seizures, cardiovascular collapse, or delirium, which are the features that make alcohol or benzo withdrawal potentially fatal.
However, relapse can be deadly, making post-withdrawal periods particularly high-risk for overdose.
Why is opioid withdrawal not deadly?
Withdrawal presents with symptoms opposite of opioid intoxication - dilated pupils, diarrhea, nausea, restlessness, piloerection, anxiety, yawning, and sweating.
