Last night we had the opening of Where We Stand, an exhibition exploring Scotland's community land ownership. Some beautiful works on display until 30th May...then I'll be having a chat at Community Land Scotland Conference on the 30th about Archives as Land activism.

This popped up on my feed and gave me a good giggle. We're all a bit wonky.

A key figure in the Land War, founded the Irish Land League in 1879 to address the plight of tenant farmers, advocating for fair rents, fixity of tenure, and the right to freely sell their occupancy, and later played a crucial role in the Highland Land League.

Michael Davitt, who had suffered the indignation of eviction from his home in Straide County Mayo during the Great Starvation and at the age of eleven was to have his right arm amputated following an accident at a mill. That boy went on to change the course of Irish History.

“To remain in these places” is an important phrase, for it is what the struggle was about. Without security of tenure, the exodus would have continued... today it's a battle against AirBnB and over tourism.

It was a total shock to see this unfold on the news. Really feel for my fellow archivists past and present who have mainted the collections at the museum
