10.07.2025 21:10 — 👍 71 🔁 45 💬 0 📌 6The photo shows two open pages from a historical document, specifically an Act passed in the 38th year of King George III, A.D. 1798, during the Second Session of the First Parliament of the Province. The document is titled "C H A P. VII" and is dated July 6, 1798. It is an "Act to prevent the further introduction of SLAVES, and to limit the Term of Contracts for SERVITUDE within this Province." The left page begins with a preamble explaining the intent to abolish slavery and servitude, noting that people enjoying freedom by law should not encourage slavery. It mentions the repeal of previous acts and the assembly's authority to enact this legislation. The right page continues the act, detailing provisions to prevent the continuation of slavery. It includes clauses about the rights of children born to enslaved individuals, the termination of servitude after a certain age, and penalties for non-compliance.
On this day in 1793, the Act Against Slavery was passed in Upper Canada. Originally meant to abolish slavery, it was watered down by slave-holding politicians. In the end, it just banned the importation of enslaved individuals and freed enslaved children when they turned 25.
