A little more than 24 hours and our stay on Machias Seal Island for the 2025 seabird nesting season will come to an end. Most of the birds have departed for the winter, just Leach's storm-petrel and gulls remain. Summaries coming soon, dreams of the 2026 season have already started.

In 1908 there was "an enormous colony of terns on Gull rock" (which is less than 100 m from Machias Seal Island). "The keeper estimated between 5 and 6 thousand (birds)".

As promised, I have looked around and cannot find anything that predates lighthouse keepers on the island. I did find a report that suggests terns were present in 1873 and common tern eggs were collected in 1885. This suggests to me that terns were present prior to keepers.

UNB researchers find 33-year-old puffin, marking a known record age for the bird | CBC News How old is an old puffin?Β  Well, the oldest known puffin in New Brunswick was found this week at 33 years old.

Turns out people think the 33-year old puffin is pretty interesting… we agree! www.cbc.ca/news/canada/... πŸͺΆπŸ¦‘πŸ§ͺ

We note that an older puffin has been observed in the Gulf of Maine, but not on Machias Seal Island.

33 year old puffin captured on Machias Seal Island.

We haven't done a full check, but we might have captured the oldest puffin on Machias Seal Island. While the longevity record for Atlantic Puffin is 45 years (from Iceland), the North American record is 33 years. Last night we captured a bird banded as a chick in 1992, making it 33!πŸ§ͺπŸͺΆ

We've had a busy few weeks here at MSI! Razorbill and Common Murre chicks have fledged and the colony is starting to get quiet. A little less than a month before the puffins start to fledge!

After years of seeing the faded plastic band on this puffin and being unable to re-sight it, we finally re-captured it and replaced its bands. This bird was first banded as chick in 1996 making it 29 years old (!) and among the oldest in our records. πŸ¦‘πŸͺΆπŸ§ͺ

Conservation implications of wide-ranging year-round movement and distribution of Aleutian Island breeding Aethia cristatella (Crested Auklets) Abstract. Despite representing a crucial conservation concern, challenges in measuring seabird movement outside the breeding season remain. Among Alcidae,

Our new paper (early view out now!) details an unexpected triangular pattern of migration for Crested Auklets. 95% of our tagged birds spent time in the Chukchi Sea and Sea of Okhotsk before returning to their nesting site.
