A photo of the entrance to the 'Connections' exhibit, on now at the Royal Alberta Museum. The writing on the wall reads: "Bringing neuroscience and art together."

A photo of the exhibit's exit. The writing in the wall reads: "It takes a village. This collection was born from a desire to build links between the University of Alberta's Neuroscience and Mental Health Institute (NMHI), people with neurological and Mental health disorders, and the community at large through art and creativity. From the neuroscientist to the patient, the caregiver and the clinician, we believe that true and meaningful progress involves collaboration and self expression."

A photo of an oil on canvas painting by Hannah Dotzenroth, titled 'Reflection.' Two identical women face each other across a diving line. One woman, facing away from the viewer, is painted in blue and appears to be crying. The other woman, facing towards the viewer, is painted in orange, and is observing the first woman sympathetically.

A photo of the painting's placard, which reads: "This piece is a dichromatic self-portrait in which the consciousness is split into two opposing figures facing one another. It is inspired by Marina Abramovic's performance 'The Artist is Present,' in which visitors were invited to sit in front of the artist. In this painting, it is the two sides of the mind that confront one another; as one breaks down in tears, the other looks on in passive concern. The viewer is positioned on the side of the broken mind, which brings the feeling of being trapped in such thought patterns, even when we can see the other side." The placard then repeats itself in French.

My department, the Neuroscience and Mental Health Institute, has an exhibit at the Royal Alberta Museum called 'Connections,' about how art and science can inform each other. I'll just share one person's work because it's a good exhibit and you should go to it!

The duality of having the blues is that your brain tells you to never leave your room but as soon as you do and get some sun, life literally feels brighter and you can breathe a little easier. Get some sun. Highly recommend.
