Page from Paul Hoste's book "L’Art des Armées Navales" (Lyon, 1697). The force of the elements is dramatically depicted in this engraving of ships in a heavy storm, in which water, lightning and clouds create a powerful image of the perils of seafaring. The engraver used a tight pattern of grids and lines to create a dark and dangerous atmosphere, showing the power of the elements.

Illustrating his theory on musical harmony and nature, Athanasius Kircher (1602–1680) shows the creation of the earth as an organ. Each of the six days of the Creation is depicted as an organ register, with small pictures next to it, showing what God created on this day. The wind coming out of the pipes symbolizes that the creation is in full play, although nobody is playing the keyboard. From Athanasius Kircher, Musurgia universalis, 1650, 412.
