on the one hand yes, it does seem to be crazily bureaucratic. on the other hand, it's a value judgement, and it isn't fair to expect schools to be the arbiters of those values.

Spot on.

Once worked somewhere that had a QA process where we had to review a class set of books & produce a little bar chart to 'rate' the teacher on things like frequency of marking, how often students responded to feedback etc. We spent more time doing that than any actual marking...🀯

No they're not, but they always need to be triangulated. On their own they can be misleading and lead to false conclusions about the quality of provision. But, conversely, you can't make a proper judgement without looking in books.

This was all great, but the chat near the end about CPD in schools was particularly interesting.

If you're already doing something that works, making that better is a more efficient way to improve teaching than introducing something new.
