As you say, the origins are obscure, but most people don't know or care about where it came from. The term still is highly loaded because of Shakespeare and the popularly understood association with a greedy, vindictive Jew. I'm not sure why you're defending its use.

I disagree. Antisemitic incidents are skyrocketing. I'm trying to teach children the dangers of demonizing language at the Illinois Holocaust Museum. Keeping this slur alive doesn't help. And I see no point in being pedantic about the word's origin. It's a slur, plain and simple.

I know what a shyster is. The origin of the word is from Shakespeare's Shylock, a money-grubbing Jew. As a Jew myself, I think it behooves us to stop perpetuating ethnic slurs.
