Last night we had heavy rain, the type where you can’t see the lines on the road and there’s standing water on all the roads. I was on the interstate and was passed by a pickup pulling a utility trailer at 75 mph. It’s a 70 mph area, but I was down to ~55 as the rain was bucketing down. So unsafe.

I felt this yesterday, driving my Volvo S60, which is not an insubstantial car. I was surrounded by a large number of "New Hampshire limousines" (AKA pick-up trucks), and felt pretty tiny. Even when driving the taller Mach-E, I can't compete with full-sized pickups.

Medicare Advantage programs, which most of those commercials are hawking, are not the best plan for most older people. There have been plenty of stories about this. They are great for the companies, as you'd expect.

Wasn't that the "Star Wars Holiday Special"? 😂

Very true. I grew up in what’s one of the wealthiest counties today (Suffolk), and also lived in one of the poorer ones (St Lawrence).

When you block your robotic vacuum from sending data, and the company bricks your vacuum. The owner rewrites code to let it work offline.

One definition of a bad day.

I had to adjust the tires in my wife's Subi last weekend.

I had a stock CX500 custom, and it was a decent bike, if a little odd looking; I put at least 10-15K miles on it. I also had a CX500-Turbo, but that was a different beast.

I had, too old, off by one, then correct.

Same pattern. Darn years.

I have a Lenovo T61 that I bought when I started my PhD in 2006. It still works fine, though the battery has seen better days. It runs Linux, which prolonged its life considerably.

I started re-reading "The Secrets of Insects" by @richardkadrey.bsky.social on Halloween; it seemed like the perfect time for it. I recommend it if you haven't read it.

Avalanche. I owned a first generation one and loved that truck.

The Montero is not a bad choice either.

I checked the closest dealer with one, and they are putting $21k on the hood for a launch edition model. $73K->$52K. I'm not in the market, but wow.

It’s so odd on a normal flight. The only time I remember clapping as a good thing was when the tail cone fell off our plane.

Several years ago, I stayed at Cumberland Lodge in Windsor for a conference. During an afternoon break, we walked down an old trail until we were turned around by a policeman, as we were walking up to the Royal Lodge grounds. We stuck to the better marked trails after that.
