Everyone talks about the hallucinated sources, but the quality of sources is equally important. AI is not retrieving high quality peer reviewed articles, but predatory journals, open access of varying quality and blog or news sources. NOT research.

For work I actually ran real world experiments using AI for tasks, starting with a lit review. It took me longer (2x hours) to double check the poor sources it provided than build a better lit review for the subject.

Yesterday the Post ran a story about the National Park Service censoring displays and exhibits critical of America's past. The NPS even has a database of what's being considered for erasure. I downloaded the 7GB database and turned it into a protest bot. Here's @nps-uncensored.bsky.social.

All I can think about is Jeff Bezos saying that he slashed jobs at the Washington Post — including those of foreign correspondents in the Middle East — based on "the data," and a few weeks later a whole war breaks out in the Middle East that these laid off folks would have covered as true experts.

And we know that as "straight forward" as a lit review is, AI consistently fails at that task.
