A safe space for common sense. Contextualising local news beyond the limits of our infamous nine-day memory.
You know, it's not that the TTPS union head isn't raising valid concerns here. It's that his determined silence on the disturbing amount of corruption difficult their ranks makes it hard to take him seriously.

Is it me or are we seeing a lot of stories about children ending up seriously hurt (or worse) while they should've been under adult supervision lately?
05.01.2025 14:47 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Again, when you say "law-abiding citizens" have nothing to fear from a TTPS that has a history of abusing its power against law-abiding citizens... What are you really saying?
(Also, can we get an update on how many of the 126 arrestees have been charged?)
You see this? We have to stop it. It's amazing how many of us have little interest in minding the business of our country but never miss an opportunity to be disgusting about real-life trauma.
The only aspect of this tragedy that is relevant to the general public is that report.

When I say that our problems are solvable and that our leaders have the solutions, this is what I mean.
The Nat Sec Ministry let the 3yo programme lapse in 2022. In 2024, they're scrambling to handle a spike in violence and talking about reinstating it.

As they say, the function of a system is what it does.
So I know the ppl quoted here, the ppl actually trying to help, know precisely why a govt that claims to care about crime would spend public money on crime-fighting measures that seem designed to fail.
Do *we* know why?
As we're talking so much about effective crime strategies these days, this article from November reminded me of two others linked below.
They actually know how to address our issues, inno.
An object lesson in the power of language and how dangerous it can be when it is used for misdirection:
A police officer who "misbehaves" IS a criminal. So to give them extra powers IS to give criminals the benefit.

Once again, if your laws cannot stand up to legal challenges, then your laws are flawed. If the TTPS (the org charged with upholding the law) cannot be effective within the bounds of the law, then it has some SERIOUS problems.
Let's address that instead of all this pretense.
And to respond to the failure to protect a special prosecutor with what amounts to "it's not like this is the first time" and then essentially say "but don't worry, we gotchu" is a CHOICE.
05.01.2025 11:53 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0It is bizarre to respond to police corruption the same way you treat with the public's willingness to assist in the fight against crime. Because the TTPS is legally empowered and armed to UPHOLD the law.
It's even wilder to do that at a time when you've EXPANDED their powers.
You're 100% right about that and please believe they WILL be pulling plays from it because they've been plagiarizing the American right for a long time.
04.01.2025 18:26 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Oh, I don't think we can call it just yet. What I will say is that we just saw a version of a very similar struggle play out up north, so it would behoove the incumbents to be VERY careful.

04.01.2025 17:32 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Fair points. I agree that, within the context of prevailing voter concerns, the main goal is likely to be to project a sense of stability in the transition (which would require what will be seen as a KCR proxy). Of course, given that the opps are likely to take the tack that the current situation...
04.01.2025 17:32 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Well, another way to look at it is that there are a few options depending on the message the party wants to send, but if it's the usual, yeah, it's not hard to guess.
And as for the succession planning, do we know what that means in the context of him being the first to step down willingly?
