The war they won’t have to fight I know what war does to families. It doesn’t stay β€œover there”; it will be felt here too, for years to come. I don’t know how anyone who claims to love this country can support this

On our Sunday morning outing in the park, we often meet a lovely collie called Shuggy and her equally lovely owner. I’m afraid #sophiefromromania always lunges at Shuggy though she does accept treats from the owner. If only we could let her off the lead I’m sure she’d get better

Got a busy day interviewing two top AI scientists and then believe it or not dancing or at least moving to music at a Parkinson’s event this evening. #Sophiefromromania says that sounds exhausting - I’ll just lie here chewing up my bed

I am immensely disappointed that the Government has today scrapped permanent refugee status. Refugees will now face reviews every 30 months and be forced to return if their country is deemed 'safe'.

We know that countries listed as 'safe' aren't safe for everybody, particularly LGBTQ+ refugees.

Refugee status to be temporary as Shabana Mahmood rips up rules on UK asylum Home secretary announces 30-month protection limit, with refugees required to leave if their home countries are later judged safe

So if I’ve understood correctly, we’re going to carry on supporting illegal wars whilst also blaming people who flee the ensuing chaos and destruction

Speaking to the Guardian on the day before the byelection result, Mahmood urged her colleagues to acknowledge that the UK public had β€œlegitimate grievances” about the unfairness of allowing people to arrive in small boats and the strain on public services from excessive immigration.

Speaking to the Guardian on the day before the byelection result, Mahmood urged her colleagues to acknowledge that the UK public had β€œlegitimate grievances” about the unfairness of allowing people to arrive in small boats and the strain on public services from excessive immigration.

Compare and contrast Starmer calling Green's "extremists", "divisive" and "sectarian" with Mahmood repeating false Reform claims about "legitimate concerns" and "strain on public services". It isn't a choice between Reform and Labour when end result is the same.

Reform's language may be more hostile, although that is debatable with some of this government's rhetoric, and their policies more explicitly racist, but the outcome is the same, migrants being denied rights and deported, asylum seekers left without safety, and embedding racism all for starters.

What the Greens did is the opposite of sectarianism. They looked at what the British public might be interested in and what unites them. Muslims don’t just vote on Gaza you plebs. They’re in the economy, housing crisis and using the NHS too. We’re whole people.

At this point, it’s a conscious choice to ignore the harm their policies are doing, both to migrant communities and to their electoral prospects - suggesting it’s an ideological commitment, at least for Mahmood. Also disingenuous to conflate the planned change to settlement with β€˜illegal migration’

The current argument of the British right is that Muslims turned out in "blocs" with "family voting" to cast their ballots for a party led by a gay Jewish man, and this shows that multiculturalism has failed, voting is "sectarian" and we are in a crisis.

Hmmmmmm.

Hard to recall a war that even those starting it couldn't really come up a pretence for. They've already blown up nuclear weapons capacity and bombing won't force the regime out.

It’s a running joke in academia that Matt Goodwin is bad at maths.

This sort of thing is why: the combined Labour/Green vote could have split in any way possible and Goodwin would have finished 2nd or 3rd. He did not lose because progressives coordinated. He lost *in spite of them not doing so*.

I’m afraid this letter shows why so many Labour MPs think Starmer needs to go. His political antenna is non-existent. If you have just been humbled in a by-election it might not be the best idea to slag off the choices of the voters who deserted you in their droves.
