My inside voice shouts "That's a COLLAGE - NOT A QUILT!" I like collage. But collage is not quilting.

Making quilts is largely an exercise in self-delusion and stubbornness. I always think my next project won't take very long.

I really enjoy comparing the work in progress with the final. Quilting is such a process-oriented medium. The quilting and binding transforms the pieces in surprising and interesting ways. It adds something in the textured overlay and removes details like seams.

I forgot to share this one earlier: Butler Valley, AZ (Fondamonte), completed Sept 2025.

The first of the "land use policy" series. Maybe I should think of a less dry-sounding title for the series? It makes it sound so boring.

"Exurbia" (from the ongoing Land Use Policy series): a quilted meditation on housing growth through subdividing land. The straight line cuts break the fabric. But the fabrics continue to change and increase in complexity with those cuts.

I just finished binding this second iteration of the Declaration of Independence.

I think I'm going to push the next version towards increased verisimilitude and legibility on the next version.

That's very true about needing time. I think it came out different from my expectations. I think I'll need the time to release those expectations and look at it with a different perspective.

I like to work in variations on a theme.

I made the blue and white double wedding ring on the left in 2024. It reminded me of plates, so I tried inserting gold like kintsugi on the second one (on the right).

I guess the series is still in progress...

I'm disappointed. It isn't what I hoped for. I've been dragging my feet on quilting and then binding it. It's fine. It's just not exciting or interesting.

I wanted it to evoke china plates and kintsugi. Maybe I need to simplify it further? Fewer fabrics next time?

Wow. That map is incredible. Thank you so much for sharing all of these. It's so inspiring to see so many people making powerful and emotional art.

I love this public art piece. It's ephemeral, interactive, meaningful, and moving.

It's very beautiful and now you know how to successfully achieve a flat embroidered image if you need that effect in the future.

I'm intrigued by this thesis because the nude female form represented in classical through baroque eras often look like male bodies with two scoops of ice cream appended to symbolize breasts.

Argh. This title makes me rage. "Even the quilters"? Quilting has been one of the only acceptable forms of political expression and activism for women for centuries. The history of the craft is steeped in protest. The title should have been "even the cat butt drumming communities."

Oooo. Please update. I am also mourning the absence of Pam Erny. I am still hoarding every inch of my stash and dreading the day I need to buy more.

Most beginners who think they can sew a whole coat as their first project are most unrealistic about the work and time necessary to complete it. Skills can be developed as needed. Patience and commitment are the biggest barriers.

My less wicked alternative is to point you to Waffle Patterns. A person could, during the course of sewing a jacket, learn what you need with enough patience and commitment. Start with the fancy pockets (straight lines). Move on to the hood. Use lining fabric to practice.

I might, after an initial warning, agree to do just as he wants. Have him draft and sew the hood. Insist you can't teach pattern drafting. I wouldn't be surprised if he loses all interest after trying to sew an ugly misshapen hood and discovers sewing is a skill you need to learn step by step

You could obliquely call it "The Ninth" because it has 9 blocks in it and honors your tradition without burdening such a cheerful and cozy piece with the name of a necromancer.

Thank you! I only knew that her favorite colors were "magenta and cream," so I included a range of hues that could be considered magenta. 😆

Made a "quick" and cheerful nine patch quilt for my friend in her favorite colors for her 40th birthday. It's a traditional quilt done in a modern colorway.

It's so odd how some clothes last while others don't - sometimes defying brand, fabric content, and quality of construction.

Some details. I want to move towards using free hand quilting to "draw" images in the fabric. A sewing machine is a very large and clunky drawing implement.

I took this as an opportunity to practice some long arm quilting designs and techniques before I quilt my kintsugi/DWR.

I think the phrase horror vacui is clearer than "weird little guys" because you're contrasting a specific form of minimalism and maximalism. "Weird little guys" is overly broad. I thought you were talking about those baroque portraits of pale Dutch merchants with small hands - not Bosch.
