A screenshot with a short excerpt from the the interview.

Question: Are there any blog posts youโ€™d like to highlight from over the years?

Gautam: I really like posts that share more about the humans behind the research. Omer Reingold ran a series on โ€œresearch-life stories,โ€ a great representative one is Bobby Kleinbergโ€™s. Luca Trevisan had a series of posts from gay and lesbian computer scientists in commemoration of Turingโ€™s 100th birthday, you can read his own account here.

Arnab: Completely agreed with Gautam. Iโ€™d also like to highlight Gil Kalaiโ€™s valiant effort at โ€œCombinatorics and More.โ€ Gilโ€™s blog has been actively maintained since 2008! Itโ€™s still often the first place to break news about advances in combinatorics.

The simplex algorithm is super efficient. 80 years of experience says it runs in linear time. Nobody can explain _why_ it is so fast.

We invented a new algorithm analysis framework to find out.

Labeling Data with Language Models: Trick or Treat? Large language models are now labeling data for us.

The debate over โ€œLLMs as annotatorsโ€ feels familiar: excitement, backlash, and anxiety about bad science. My take in a new blogpost is that LLMs donโ€™t break measurement; they expose how fragile it already was.

I wonder whether one could add a function modeling the "usefulness" of LLMs in the grant writing process, with the goal of understanding how this impacts the overall competition.

25.10.2025 15:11 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

At least for ERC grants it seems like there are a lot more submissions (=more competition) because it got easier to prepare proposals (=less cost).

Do you think this changes the competition fundamentally or is it just a case of more people entering the competition?

Such a strong growth in submissions over the past few years (probably because of LLMs?). 38% more than two years ago. Wow.

An acceptance rate of less than 10% is really tough.

Good luck to everyone who submitted!

Also, if you are a reviewer for a paper with 3 weak accepts: Consider becoming the champion.

IMO often these are very solid papers. If no reviewer has objections, why not just accept it (esp. at large ML conference)? Makes the authors happy & there is one less resubmission in the peer review system
