I did think that assertion that was passed around did seem a little unsafe
can you cite an earlier one?
#MedievalMonday with one of my favourite sites in the country, The Anchor Church caves in Derbyshire, while altered in c19 are believed to have housed a hermit between c8-9

While this is both Christ descending to Hell on the left & ascending to heaven on the right

There is *a lot* going on here,
for example - this rather hard to parse scene which is in fact Mary being buried after her death

If that dating seems suspiciously-specific...
on the cross is a lamb (Jesus depicted as an actual sheep) & this was outlawed by the Council of Constantinople in 692
so while its possible a recalcitrant mason carved this later, it seems likely to have been earlier

However - these pieces are dwarfed by this ...utterly incredible frieze, discovered in 1820 under the chancel floor being used as the lid of a tomb
dated to pre-692
unbelievable ๐ณ

And a bit of local celebrity - T'owd man is reputedly the oldest depiction of miner in the world
there seem to be a a wide spread of dating estimations tossed around from 800 years old to ...much older,
(and the village of Bonsall would rather like him back)

These two are especially striking the 'King & Queen of hearts' in a suitably naive style

Either built into the walls or on display inside is an absolute treasure trove of Pre-Conquest stonework (though ...full disclosure, i've struggled to find secure dating on much of it)

So this is St Mary's Wirksworth - to be perfectly honest the fabric of the current building isn't of the greatest interest after extensive restorations through the 1800's
however whats on display inside is a different matter...

i mean - my first glance was '[something]-wine', but can't imagine Hadrians wall was prime wine country, even in a climatic event like the medieval warm period
yes - white fields or similar
Otherwise, don't know

yh the Hereford School is pretty wild
there's all sorts in there that seems pretty out-there to a c21 audience
Undoubtedly all the influences you mentioned are in the mix,
but its still a journey from the text of the bible to the beasts: griffins, dragons, serpents
its a lot to take in at once!
It really is pretty special
Can only imagine its impact on its original c12 audience ๐ณ๐ณ

i was nervous about it all day! esp since i was only going to be there mid-afternoon,
but think this was about 3.15pm on a sunday
(think last time it was more like 4pm on a weekday, but it was also much sooner after covid so, fair)
i'd lost where this church was entirely on my map of pins, but managed to make it in this winter
