Words matter, so let’s clean up the rhetoric:

Say this:

Bottom line: No one—we repeat, no one—should be forced to be a parent or to be pregnant.

Abortions after 28 weeks are often stigmatized—even by those who consider themselves “pro choice.” This only furthers the anti-abortion agenda. There are a number of reasons why someone might pursue later care, including receiving new information or facing barriers to access.

When or why someone gets an abortion is, quite frankly, not our business. We are firm in our belief that people are the experts in their own lives. We are proud of this community for showing support for all abortion seekers—no matter their gestational period. We also know this is rare.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists defines late term pregnancy at 41 weeks. Nowhere in the U.S. can a person get an abortion after 35 weeks and six days—five weeks before a pregnancy is considered late term.

Fact: "Late term abortion" does not exist. Period. It is a term weaponized by the anti-abortion movement to spread misinformation and stigmatize abortion. (Thread)

For too many months, we’ve witnessed this fascist regime use ICE to terrorize communities across the country. What’s happening in Minneapolis is larger and more escalated than what we continue to experience in DC, but the goals are the same: to intimidate communities, scare immigrants, and rip families apart. This regime wants us to turn away from each other and isolate, but what we’ve seen instead is a mass mutual aid movement. On the streets from DC to Minneapolis, community members are bearing witness, taking care of each other, and putting their bodies between federal agents and their neighbors. That is mutual aid in action and the thing that will get us through this horrifying moment.

Over 30 years ago, DCAF was built on the principles of mutual aid and it is still embedded in everything we do: We ask our community to invest in each other, fund abortion, and make it possible for anyone to make a decision for their bodies and their future. It’s a beautiful model that exists outside of and in response to the systems that continue to harm us. Watching videos of community members being brutalized and murdered by ICE can make us all feel hopeless. To take back that hope, look to the people of Minneapolis: After the murder of Alex Pretti, people remained in the streets—in the snow and freezing temperatures—and took care of each other. In DC and other cities across the country, people left their homes with hours notice to show solidarity with the people of Minneapolis.

We said it once, we’ll say it a thousand times: We want ICE abolished and out of our communities. We want National Guard members off our streets. We want elected officials to put down the talking points and join the people in the streets who are putting their lives on the line every day for each other. Generations before us risked their lives to fight for freedom and protect their communities from state violence. It’s our turn to be brave and defiantly believe a better world is possible. DCAF is here for whenever you need us. We promise to keep finding ways to bring joy and community in the darkest moments.
