Trump Against History
How is Trump changing our sense of who we are? We asked eminent Yale historian David W. Blight to round up some colleagues to consider the question. Here’s what they had to say.
If the argument is that Trump is single-handedly changing American history, what does that tell us other than that the American people’s historical literacy is so poor that they are easily led astray? I’m afraid this “diagnosis” is rather self-defeating.

So glad to be included in this pathbreaking volume: the first ever German-language handbook on the history of childhood, which covers a broad range of topics (education, migration, war, colonialism, dis/ability, law, emotions, to name a few). Coming your way in October!

Best answer to the question of why America is so divided today is to remind folks that it was born this way.

No Country for Old Age: America's War on Aging from Valley Forge to Silicon Valley By Mischa Honeck
The 2024 election cycle revived a longstanding American concern with old age. I don’t mean a concern with actually existing older people and their need for
Hat tip to James Chappel, who wrote this thoughtful and precise review of my book on the long history of anti-aging in America. A "brisk book" and an "important entry in the growing field of age studies." Published in the Journal of Social History, July 2025.

Project MUSE - No Country for Old Age: America's War on Aging from Valley Forge to Silicon Valley by Mischa Honeck (review)
Another kind review of No Country for Old Age! Hyung Wook Park calls it a "groundbreaking study on the discourse and culture of aging and youth in the United States" and finds it "highly convincing" as a sweeping cultural history.

Musk, an angry immigrant, launches the “America Party”, a bad remake of the viciously nativist “American Party”, which flourished briefly before imploding in the 1850s.
A delicious irony historians will appreciate.

Glad to share Heike Stoff’s critical but respectful review (in German) of my new book, which he calls “a treasure trove for a political, social, and cultural history of the United States.”

Perhaps it was this painful contradiction, the gaping chasm separating rhetoric and reality, that helped propel the current president to power. No more territory? That sentiment is definitely alien to him. /2

Remember the 2000s when Donald Rumsfeld and Barack Obama both went on the record saying the US is not an empire, and that it does not want more territory? A strange bipartisan consensus, punctuated by the gruesomeness of the War On Terror. /1

In a weirdly disturbing way radical MAGA is talking more openly about annexing Canada than Hitler aired his plans regarding Austria before 1938.
