A cave bear rug in grey. It is outlined in a rusty red color and has gold on the nose and across where the eyes would be. It also has some lines resembling cracks done along the shoulder and neck.

Where did our lost rhinos roam?

Distribution charts based on bone finds (individual dots) and habitat suitability for the four fluffy rhinos of late Pleistocene.

These are of course approximate and might not include all obscure finds. #Sciart

A portrait of the carnivorous dinosaur Dilophosaurus. It's shown side-on, turning to its left to bring its face into view. Its colours are a mix of muted reds and pinkish creams, with notable darker red stripes on the neck. The famous twin crests atop its skull are mostly covered by large air-filled structures, with an almost balloon-like appearance, while the edges of the bones crest are tipped by rows of rounded keratinous spikes. A series of stripes quills stick up from the top of the neck, while the lower areas of the neck show a series of prominent skin folds. Its eyes are a piercing orange, and stand out against the more muted body colours. The background is a textured dark reddish-grey.

After 16 months and 103 layers it's finally finished...

Mummy of a juvenile sabre-toothed cat Homotherium latidens from the Upper Pleistocene of Siberia - Scientific Reports Scientific Reports - Mummy of a juvenile sabre-toothed cat Homotherium latidens from the Upper Pleistocene of Siberia

This is not a drill, a mummified sabretooth cat has been published from the #Pleistocene permafrost of Russia. It's a Homotherium cub! The team (Lopatin et al.) reckon it's Homotherium latidens. It's too young to have enlarged upper canines. Paper is OA ... www.nature.com/articles/s41... cont...

An FYI for people doing Homotherium art:
- The colours and hair lengths of cubs are poor proxies for those features in adult cats; they change ontogenetically
- Soft tissues werenโ€™t explored in great detail in this first study; some odd details like a lack of carpal pads should be taken with salt
