@ncweaver.skerry-tech.com When I look at the California statute (https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/codes_displaySection.xhtml?sectionNum=30515.&lawCode=PEN), I see no mention of a "vertical foregrip", only a "forward pistol grip". I don't see a definition of "pistol grip", though […]

190. SNAP WTF? A very quick explainer on what (and why) Justice Jackson issued an "administrative stay" in the SNAP case late on Friday night, and on what's likely to happen next

Steve Vladeck on the apparent complexity of Justice Jackson’s administrative stay in the SNAP case: https://open.substack.com/pub/stevevladeck/p/190-snap-wtf?utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=email

This is actually a pretty standard and unremarkable move, as evidenced by Justice Jackson issuing it.

But most people won't believe that for several good reasons.

#BREAKING: Justice Jackson has issued an "administrative" stay, temporarily pausing a district court order that would've required the USDA to continue using contingency funds to pay SNAP benefits.

The stay expires 48 hours after the First Circuit rules on USDA's request for a stay pending appeal.

A (so-so) photo of a belted kingfisher (a bird I see all too seldomβ€”and it kept flying away, so I had a hard time getting this shot), a black vulture flying overhead, and a Carolina chickadee. I'd have called that last bird a black-capped chickadee but […]

An old reel to reel magnetic tape. It has a label, in Jay Lepreau's handwriting, proclaiming it to be "UNIX Original from Bell Labs v4 (see manual for fmt)"

While cleaning a storage room, our staff found this tape containing #UNIX v4 from Bell Labs, circa 1973

Apparently no other complete copies are known to exist: https://gunkies.org/wiki/UNIX_Fourth_Edition

We have arranged to deliver it to the Computer History Museum

Turns out that the limiting factor when two people are baking in the same kitchen (pumpkin bread and anadama bread) is the number of measuring cups we have. (We time-shared access to the scale and only one of us needed the stand mixer.)

Women Should Make Babies, Not Vote: Why Some on the Far Right Want to Repeal the 19th Amendment The far right takes losses at the ballot box as evidence that women do not deserve their rights.

Some on the far right want to repeal the 19th amendment. Many more share a coercive, patriarchal view of women.

I wrote about this and how the far right sees subjugating women as key to building the sort of electorate they need to win. @liberalcurrents.com

Bucks County, #Pennsylvania, was ground 0 for conservative takeover of school boards & anti-LGBTQ policies in 2021, on Central Bucks & Pennridge boards. Dems flipped both boards back in 2023. Tonight, Dems have ousted *all* Repubs from both school boards

It's impossible to overstate how much of what ICE is doing on the ground reflects this completely preposterous conflation of hostile *speech* and hostile *conduct.*

The First Amendment protectsβ€”or, at least, is supposed to protectβ€”the former up and until it's a "true threat," which none of this is.
