‘Cary Grant brings his new bride to visit his aunts only to discover they have a new hobby: killing men & burying them in the cellar.’

Frank Capra made this after ‘Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.’ What a wild tonal swing! Cary’s face acting is all time.

Now watching: ‘Lake Michigan Monster’ (2018)

‘An eccentric sea captain conscripts his friends to obsessively hunt down an alleged monster lurking in Lake Michigan.’

A very silly time from the ‘Hundreds of Beavers’ guys. So, the wackiness is similar (though not quite as cartoony).

Now watching: ‘Rebecca’ (1940)

‘A young woman impulsively marries a rich, dashing widower only to discover his estate and life are deeply haunted by the specter of her deceased predecessor.’

Alfred Hitchcock’s sterling Best Picture winner is a psychological spook. Dream-like with many twists.

Now watching: ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ (2014)

‘Age-old vampire housemates, being filmed by a New Zealand documentary team, deal with the foibles of modern life, as well as rival werewolves.’

I saw this one in the theater back when. This one is very funny & spawned a successful TV show.

She did try to kick the camera! This is right before she advanced upon me to do it.

Now watching: ‘I Married a Witch’ (1942)

‘On the eve of election, a prospective governor is swooned over by a Salem-era witch (after a spell backfires and is cast on her; also, he’s engaged to a socialite).’

A Halloween screwball (directed by Frenchman Rene Clair) that inspired TV’s Bewitched.

“Say, have you ever eaten truffles in Bermuda?!”

A line uttered in no other film ever.

Now watching: Supernatural (1933)

‘Carole Lombard, the innocent heiress to a fortune, is possessed by the spirit of a murderer who aims to kill again.’

A short (64 minutes) pre-Code curio, spooky but a bit of an unintentional romp (lots of maniacal, evil laughter & eyebrow acting in this one).

Silly spooks continue!

This time, city pollster Fred McMurray is hostage to homicidal hillbillies who think he knows the location of a lost family treasure. But they try to kill him non-stop anyway. Maybe the only film ever where people are baled into hay?

Now watching: ‘The Ghost Breakers’ (1940)

Cat & Canary was so successful they ran it back. Only this time, Paulette inherits a haunted castle and Hope is on the run from the law after a case of mistaken identity.

Not quite as charming as the first outing but perhaps spookier.

Even if there were, how it comes across would depend on the mainstream media’s willingness to cover and treat it seriously and get it in front of eyeballs. And I have my doubts they would do that.

Just watched: ‘The Cat and the Canary’ (1939)

‘A young woman is the surprise heir to a distant family fortune, which she will forfeit if declared insane within 30 days. Coincidentally, she has inherited a haunted bayou mansion.’

Very early Bob Hope, adding silly to the (stylish Paramount) spooks.

A silly spookfest with the Universal monster roster. Spritely, banter-filled fun.

Planted 300 tulips in front of my fence! Took 2 hours. The ground is so dry and hard I didn’t get them as deep down as they’re supposed to go, but they’re covered so I think they’ll be fine.

It will all pay off in April!

Blu-Rays are, indeed, still a thing! I love old screwball romcoms (from the 30's and 40's) and the only way to see them when you want is to have them on disc.

Newer releases will generally be discounted after a time. Black Friday week next month will be a good time to grab a lot of recent films.
