Indie Game Developers - The executive director of this non-profit, @shanarosenberg.bsky.social , will be hosting a game jam on @itch.io on textile sustainability. Any aspect of textile sustainability is welcome to be explored in both video and analog games. Some games will be used in our work!

Thread Up Oxford 2024 by the numbers

Prevented 22.41 tons of textile waste from going to a landfill or overseas.

Had $6043 in Karma Bucks vouchers used by those in hardship at our shop.

Gave away 3,164 pairs of free socks.

Had $1312 worth of creative reuse supplies go to educators and others.

This is a shame. We are hoping soon to be working with a textile to textile recycler. But it’s challenging because we have to sort by fiber content and we don’t have the equipment.

Thread Up Oxford is a very unique idea - we want to #REDUCE new textile consumption through outreach and education, encourage #REUSE of secondhand textiles, and facilitate #RECYCLING of everything that can’t be reused in some way. Please join us in a new lifestyle of #textilesustainability !

#Freejects are an important way we redistribute textile material back out into the community. Hundreds of pounds a month of textile items with flaws/stains/holes that are still usable in some way are outside our donation center whenever we are open for anyone in the community to grab for any reason.

Tires pollute microplastics! Fabric is only one source of this pollutant in our environment.

T ariffs are one reason to shift your buying to secondhand rather than new - but buying secondhand should have been the model all along. From a #textilesustainability focus - The fast fashion industry accounts for 10% of global carbon emissions due to production and delivery systems.

Tariffs are a whole other ball of wax we haven’t thought of as far as the effects on new vs secondhand consumption. It’s important to understand the entire picture in order to convince the public to buy secondhand.

What does Thread Up Oxford do? Most of what we do is redistribute fabric items back out into the community. Our service area to sell/give away/repurpose is firmly focused in Oxford, Ohio (USA) and surrounding Butler County. But we extend also into Indiana and Ohio’s Preble, Hamilton, and others.

Really great article going over the #Ghana #FastFashion disaster we’ve created with our over-consumption of new textiles. Brings it up to 2024 as previous things I’ve shared are from earlier.

Because of how we currently do things due to low resources, we don’t know the metrics on how much leaves those tables each week. And we don’t know if what’s taken will end up in the trash or donated to a place that won’t deal with it sustainably. But at least it’s one less step away from the trash.

One critical part of our #circulareconomy #textileconservation #zerowaste mission is to keep everything out of the landfill and to keep things from going overseas, like to #ghana, to mess with their environment and native clothing and textile industries. Giving away “Freejects” is one way we do so.

Our company would like to move into being able to sort unusable material by composition as we can send on to companies that require that for their uses.
