Speak For Yersel Speak for Yersel maps the different words, sounds and sentences used throughout Northern Ireland, but we need YOU to do this. Take the survey now.

But in some varieties of English, 'The dog needs fed' would sound strange, and people would say 'The dog needs to be fed' or 'The dog needs feeding' instead. (2/2)

How would YOU say it? Let us know here:

The results are clear: people all over NI would say a sentence like 'The dog needs fed'.
This sentence may sound so normal to you, you don't realise that it's a Northern Irish way of talking....(1/2)

There's no right or wrong answers - we're interested in how you actually speak! We hope you'll have fun along the way and discover some little linguistic gems - and maybe a little about how you speak yourself!

When you’re talking to a group of people, would you say β€˜you’, β€˜youse’, or β€˜ye’? Would you ever say β€˜I’m pure ragin’’? And do you pronounce β€˜meat’ the same as β€˜mate’?

Did you know that you can tell us what you think about these types of sentences on Speak for Yersel Northern Ireland?

Who all went out to a Halloween celebration last night? πŸŽƒπŸŽ‡

(And who all knew that not every English speaker would start a question with 'who all'?)

Would you say 'Who all did you see?'
What about 'Who did you see all?'

There are three surveys for people who live on the island of Ireland to take: how you pronounce things, what words you use, and how you put these together to make phrases and sentences.

Both will map the diverse varieties heard from Ballycastle in the north to Ballycotton in the south. City-dwellers in Belfast and Dublin in the east can have their say alongside the rural populations of tiny villages like Belleek and Brandon in the west.

These are the kinds of questions asked in Speak for Yersel: Northern Ireland and Speak for Yersel: Republic of Ireland, two brand-new resources which will create a digital snapshot of how English on the island of Ireland and Scots in Ulster are used in the 21st century.
