β‘οΈ Macron, Tusk to discuss deploying peacekeepers to Ukraine after ceasefire, Bloomberg reports.
President Macron is visiting Warsaw on Dec. 12 to brief the Polish prime minister on his meeting with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump last week.
I hope this lady, who is plainly a bit of a nut, gets a reward for showing how ridiculous is airport "security."

Ah, Eurostar! As in the sub-channel original. Crummy wifi and filthy windows. Always. Plus decaying seat-backs and no holders for drinks. And inane nagging messages on the TV screens. #monopoly

07.12.2024 17:23 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Ahem.... Of course this raises rather starkly two very different issues, one of which is that a gazillion smart folk (including a bunch of my friends) decided to go MAGA; the other is that the MAGA analysis assumes that America ain't great, which is pretty unobservant and, well, unpatriotic.

07.12.2024 14:41 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I'm reminded of Nicholas Kristoff's comment on George W. Bush's PEPFAR, said now to have saved 20m+ lives in Africa - the single best policy of any prez in his lifetime. (Of course, as the sadly late Mike Gerson - who had a lot to do with it - pointed out, Koop had laid the groundwork....)
07.12.2024 14:39 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0When Nazi Germany invaded Denmark in World War II, the Hungarian chemist George de Hevesy dissolved the gold Nobel Prizes of Max von Laue and James Franck in aqua regia to prevent the Nazis from stealing them. He placed the resulting solution on a shelf in his laboratory at the Niels Bohr Institute. After the war, he returned to find the solution undisturbed and precipitated the gold out of the acid. The Nobel Society then recast the Nobel Prizes using the original gold.
Well, thereβs a story.

07.12.2024 05:34 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Wel, it's complicated! One reason why Americans love criticizing the UK single-payer model, and vice versa, is that neither wants to look at continental Europe. In Belgium and France, where we live now, the systems are hybrid. We are required to buy private insurance from what are called mutuals.
