AI in English has been a hot topic in our school, like I know it has been in many others. Here is the prompt I designed for my Gr. 12s. I taught them how to name Doc versions before, during & after edits. They had to save & submit AI responses & explain what they learned about their writing.

I decided to reread all the texts I listed on my 4U CT list so I could have good conversations with my grade 12s this month. These are just some! It was a lofty goal & I have many more to read this week! It’s been challenging and SO fun. My 12s were shocked by my plan but they know I’m invested.

Group writing on white boards! Students circulate, editing or just reading other responses and then they record personal responses, using their classmates ideas.

Follow up to last post: essay writing is scaffolded. I provide feedback at each stage. Yes, it’s a lot of work but this is where short videos are everything. I’ll record comments on thesis and arguments. We all refine them at the same time. Same process for each stage.

Examples of vertical learning in NBE3U. We are comparing the ideas addressed in a variety of text forms. I’m not a fan of “This demonstrates”, but we need to master other skills rn. Later I use this phrase as a lesson about overuse of pronouns & we beef up the word choice to be very specific.

Elements of SL in high school- what does it look like in higher grades? Explicit teaching of vocabulary and syntax in an NBE3U class. We are using vertical learning to practise! Students thinking about words and having the time and space to talk about them makes this teacher’s heart very happy!
