in 2011, the president of antifa hired me to give fashion consultancy to the organization. i recommended everyone wear navy suits with tan shoes, dress sneakers, and golf polos with slim chinos. if you arrested everyone today wearing these things, you'd destroy antifa

A natural response to "I don't understand second grade math homework" is to say that the methodology is nonsense, because whomst among us wants to admit we're incapable of understanding second grade math?

It's also totally not how we were raised to do arithmetic, and involves concepts that many of us didn't master... Which can be frustrating for parents trying to help with homework.

Introducing these ideas young is good. It helps kids build the mental scaffolding they'll need down the road and gets them in the habit of "playing" with numbers, which is necessary for more difficult problem solving.

Looking over some second grade arithmetic homework, I noticed that they were demonstrating the commutative property of addition and how that property does NOT apply to subtraction. They had a simpler name for it that littles could read and pronounce, but it's the same concept.

Maybe the reason parents are resistant to their kids learning "new math" is because they just didn't learn their upper level math as well as they thought.

I've gotten one firm handshake from an old man alongside, "You lost us early-- it was just too much."

Beloveds, I included a snippet from Frozen II when Anna believes her sister to be dead and sings a really heartfelt song about pushing on through despair.

What I’m saying is that religion is a *technology*.

And like most of the technologies modern society is based on β€” public transit, libraries, etc. β€” the original has serious problems but is still probably better than the gig economy Silicon Valley remake.

Anyway chances are decent there’s a religious body near you where a bunch of retired women who’re the most organized people you’ll ever meet in your life cook for the homeless once a week or volunteer to accompany immigrants to court.

Thinking about that Chicago apartment building. Everyone got their apartments tossed as well, and this is how you can become functionally undocumented.

How does somebody who lost their paperwork this time prove they're who they say next time?

TLC is going to have a field day, and will absolutely blame every single thing that goes awry in the CoE on her presence, regardless of its relevance.

What Klein couldn’t seem to admit was that his core political analysis is born of his personal experience, and nothing about his personal experience prepared him to face the complexity of the current moment. What he could not cope with acknowledging, is that he never thought that would matter.

Marginalized folks know TONE and LANGUAGE CHOICE are only part of what’s being communicated. But those in the power majority are accustomed to spaces that value and demand the faux nicety of polite tones no matter the core message being shared. To them, sounding angry makes you wrong in any event.

the government should not be able to smash into your home and drag you into the street for no reason. it's kind of a core civil right, perhaps THE core civil right.

This is the thing they'll never understand about "wokeness" or "political correctness" - huge organizations didn't implement these policies because of "cancel culture" or secret communists, they did it to stay competitive and viable. It's what people wanted

To say nothing of how obvious it is that none of these people understand what ACTUALLY makes the US military threatening. It's not because of how "lethal" it is, it's because we have perfected the science of putting a shitload of Stuff anywhere on the planet in like a day and a half.

The thing about the Grand Blanc domestic terror attack that has been really weird for me is that the picture going around of the perpetrator duck hunting is in a place I drove past every Sunday after church because it was so peaceful.

When I look at what the Republican Party wants to take from trans people there is no line they won't cross--my speech, my privacy, my body. When I look at the Democratic Party I see no line they're willing to draw.

Realizing that you talking over me is a sign of affinity really unlocked our IRL interactions.

It doesn't bode well for the inevitable podcast though.

If I could get a pasta bowl the diameter of my salad plates, it would be my absolute favorite dish. As it stands, I got plates with centimeter high rims in no small part as a move towards Bowls For Everything.
