A natural response to "I don't understand second grade math homework" is to say that the methodology is nonsense, because whomst among us wants to admit we're incapable of understanding second grade math?

It's also totally not how we were raised to do arithmetic, and involves concepts that many of us didn't master... Which can be frustrating for parents trying to help with homework.

Introducing these ideas young is good. It helps kids build the mental scaffolding they'll need down the road and gets them in the habit of "playing" with numbers, which is necessary for more difficult problem solving.

Looking over some second grade arithmetic homework, I noticed that they were demonstrating the commutative property of addition and how that property does NOT apply to subtraction. They had a simpler name for it that littles could read and pronounce, but it's the same concept.

Maybe the reason parents are resistant to their kids learning "new math" is because they just didn't learn their upper level math as well as they thought.

This is the thing they'll never understand about "wokeness" or "political correctness" - huge organizations didn't implement these policies because of "cancel culture" or secret communists, they did it to stay competitive and viable. It's what people wanted
