It’s taking advantage of sad and emotionally vulnerable people for more money and that should be shouted out of existence.

for the record, our obituary sounded a little boilerplate, and it’s because we did just look at another couple of obituaries in the paper and go “oh okay.” Obituaries are pretty formulaic, and using AI for this rather than just counseling people and helping them say what they need to is gross.

I wrote my own eulogy and a guy who had never met my grandma approached my mom afterwards and said “I never knew your MIL but now I kinda wish I did because she sounded fabulous.” Had another person I asked to review it the night before say they had never met her but felt like they did now.

personal, human touches makes the grief process a little easier because it shows you actually love the person who died and actually thought about what they would have liked and wanted. That’s how we ended up with a Winnie the Pooh funeral.

my mom suggested writing my grandma’s obituary with ChatGPT as a joke because we were all a mess and didn’t know how to write an obituary, and I yelled at her for it. and then I felt bad for suggesting a joke to actually put in as a personal touch to hers (that made it in). personal touches matter.
