Haha no I think what you started was a thread where I managed to make a fool of myself and had to walk back some strongly felt but misguided points. Learned a lot about comics though so that's cool

I will hold happily to the fact that two of the most important relationships in my life (my wife and
@deathcarpets.sisc.one) both sort of started with me getting into goofy ass internet misunderstandings with them about topics we no longer even feel strongly about

I think if I was doing this, I'd have to ask myself "what do I think this city means? how do I *think* it signifies and what are the distortions or assumptions that I'm possibly making?" – and I'd have to ask that a LOT throughout the writing process

Yeah...I feel like it's one of those things where the choice to do it usually means something, at the very least. Like, what does "paris" or "new york" mean to that person, if it doesn't mean something personal?

I do like to hope that the vibe around here is that getting main character'd means you're handed your cap & bells for the day & have to shake ass in the corner like a clown & do not get doxxed, but someone already apparently looked up my graduation date as a gotcha, so I'm not encouraged. Ah well.

It Happened To Me: Hit the discover tab & got into a dumb, confusing drawn-out argument on bluesky and now a bunch of comic book writers you think are cool are mad at you for being an obstinate jackass about the concept of feedback. We live and we learn, LOL

This entire thread blew up–I'm going to retract my comments and replies because they got quite off topic. Apologies; I understand the role of a comics editor better now. Was just coming at this from the POV of someone who values harsh criticism, but get that editors are more than that! Be well.

No worries. I wasn't trying to reopen it haha, you gotta understand that from my POV I asked a question and tried to explain myself and came back to a horde of pissed-off comics writers, some of whose work I know and really like, so I'm just out of my depth

Genuinely not being an asshat here if I can help it–what was I wrong about other than applying one set of values about editorial oversight to an industry where it wasn't a fit? Because based on how people are responding, it feels like I need to mea culpa for more than just that, but I'm at a loss.

Because yeah–I totally get it now! For a while in the thread there I was trying to explain my own POV in working with editors and my gripes about how many of them don't do their jobs in making work all it can be. It sounds like the gripes for comics folks are different than they are for me.

Yeah! It's so funny because truly, that was relayed to me a while up in the thread and I was like "makes sense, good talk" and then I think folks kept jumping in because I'd long since pivoted to other topics and/or the thread was too gigantic.

Like truly, I did not go in there trying to be like "all comics writers want to be CODDLED by their EDITORS." I was mostly just confused at people's aversion to editors being "person who provides a list of things you did wrong" because to me, that's their job. But clearly, there's more to it.

Fair and fair again. But RE: the "coddling" thing; this upset a lot of people and I do apologize, but I wasn't saying that YOU ALL are asking to be coddled at all–just the opposite, that no one should want that. I figured I was sort of preaching to the choir and it did NOT land.

To me, encouragement can come in the form of criticism or critical feedback. Or it's the "compliment sandwich." I suppose in comics, which is a storytelling medium above many other things, the emotional impact of a page IS the technical triumph–I probably didn't give that idea enough credit.

For sure! I think the thing that was a hairtrigger for me (and I'll absolutely cop to that) is that the OP was asking for "how did this move you?"–a lot of subjective, emotion-based language. In a lot of places, I've been taught or had to learn the hard way that this is a red flag for feedback.

I've also not been a writer for very long, and really was just asking questions about the roles people think editors are meant to have–because hell, it's entirely possible that I HAVE only worked with shit editors! Which is not a crime, but it's good to know.
