Yep! The vast majority of this freedom appears to be expressed as abuse and encouraging mob behaviour. The point is supposed to be about the ability to criticise government policy without the threat of retaliation.

They’re deeply misogynistic. They think women should be in the home, doing free childcare and labour, and they want education to be a privilege of the wealthy only. This is Christian Nationalism. These creeps want women back to economically dependent on men.

If that makes any sense. I just want to find a way to be happy. I don’t need a lot, but our situation is genuinely damaging to live in. ❤️

I’m in a difficult frame of mind. I want to be optimistic about change for mine and Chris’ personal circumstances, but also feel that realistically it’s not happening soon and I’m kind of upsetting myself by being too hopeful.

Nonetheless, the rest of the world is being dragged along by platforms where irresponsible speech is considered valid, as is disinformation. I personally don’t think lying in public discourse serves any constructive purpose.

The current US administration see themselves as free speech warriors, but it’s very clear that they only mean themselves, as the authoritarian tendencies quickly appear when they think that they’ve lost control of the conversation.

I wrote an article about free speech and social media. I’ve seen a few discussions around it lately, and I honestly feel that the approach of these US companies is causing problems. I doubt that they care.

All up, $80. I will wear cheap things if I think they suit me - I’m still picky. Less than impressed that there were no human-staffed checkouts. I just find the self-checkout really tedious and I feel like I don’t have enough hands with them, at least when it’s clothes.

I got a couple of dresses and a t-shirt for Chris. I had to talk him into it, lol. Our cramped single room is a pain to simply move in. He was wearing a very small rotation of clothes just out of convenience.

It was 23°C and humid today. I get really bothered by it, and self-admittedly cranky. I did wake up around 1pm … that wasn’t expected. I probably needed it. We went to town to get some meds for Chris and then grabbed some clothes at BigW.

I think much the same as you. Many teens needed that social connection, especially ones that found few friends in school. The problem was antisocial behaviour and predatory adults.

In short, Popper’s tolerance paradox is applicable. If we are not willing to deal with intolerance, then the intolerant will overwhelm all of us. 15/15

A basic understanding of not undermining the rights and safety of others is not in operation, so any noble intentions as to freedom are already undermined. 14/15

A responsible society accepts that the public square filled with disinformation and hatred is harmful. To do nothing is essentially to enable bullying at scale. 13/15

Think of hundreds of thousands of people all telling hundreds of different lies about you. Like you can’t even just announce that this one lie is incorrect. It’s hundreds of them. It’s impossible to stop. 12/15

Just numbers alone make it near-impossible for the marginalised to respond effectively to the disinformation. If you can’t see the problem, maybe you’re not in a minority. 11/15

It can become sufficiently common that a majority believe it to be truth, and then populist politicians see votes in reinforcing the disinformation, even legislating restrictions against fellow citizens to please the majority that were fed the disinformation. 10/15

Marginalised minorities inherently have little power. If someone with sufficient resource wishes to do so, there is little to stop them spreading disinformation about that majority that can make their lives harder and more dangerous. 9/15

Yet the impacts are real, and those profiting are not who pays.

We all pay when the planet becomes more difficult to inhabit. We all pay when vaccination rates drop to levels that allow the easy spread of infectious diseases. 8/15
