I would recommend certain essays by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941).

In one of his writings, he notes with dismay how the emergence of Japan as an Asian power is marred by its shift towards ultra nationalist populism.

He is witnessing the 1920-30s decades first hand.
