fun first. often times you can find a lot of reasons to do things in different ways, either for simplicity to build it (we all know that one), for a design vision, for stakeholders or what have you. But if whatever it is leads to the thing (can be anything literally) being less fun: Don't do it.

If you want to invest in these middle managers in big companies, get them to make a game at the 200K-1 mill range before investing tens of millions.

They should be able to deliver something, because most of us don't get close to a million bucks and can ship fun, innovative games.
