Fun fact: I interviewed at UHawaii - Manoa but didnβt get the job. Itβs such a beautiful place but I donβt know if we couldβve afforded to live there comfortably.

Prescribed or controlled burns, when done right, reduce fuel loads and the chances for uncontrollable wildfires, which are another beast entirely and mostly caused by a combo of climate change, invasive grasses, and people.

Did a terrible job of taking photos of any of Penn Stateβs beautiful, snow covered campus today but did snap this awesome office door.
Also had a blast meeting all the ecology folks and sharing a little about my labβs research :)

I think there are a lot of academics who were knowingly attended dinners and lunches where they knew Epstein would be in the 2010s that are telling themselves that actually it's cool because it's not like they're pedophiles but by the 2010s he was an unrepentant convicted pedophile, folks

Men, it's worth pondering that these academic men are the same ones that teach young women straight out of school. These are the men given academic authority over young women's careers.
It's really challenging for young women to negotiate the minefield of creepiness these men create for them.

I sell prints, canvases and posters of my work at rhenyard.darkroom.com and use proceeds to further my practice and support local mutual aid efforts. I'm keenly aware as a Black wildlife photographer how few of us are in this space, and I'm hoping my work sparks wonder & further interest πͺΆπΈπ¨

Really enjoying #BES2025. Things I appreciate:
- Morning plenaries (gets people in on time, doesnβt leave morning speakers w/ empty rooms)
- Good length coffee breaks (30 min!)
- Vegan lunch served on site
- Posters across all career stages & spread across rooms
- Strong presence of journals/editors

But more to come! Was a huuuuge effort just to get the dataset and do basic descriptive work, so we havenβt had a chance to get into many of the more interesting social-ecological questions!

Thereβs also been pretty concerted efforts to plant in equity deserving and low canopy areas in recent years, so that may play into it too (if weβre just thinking about species richness, for example)

Thanks! Weβre in the process of looking at that now. Very preliminary results show that itβs much weaker than we might expect from the literature, but I think there may be some interactions with urban form that we need to consider to tease out the patterns.

Send the ECRs our way :)
Also I really enjoyed your talk yesterday! Such cool work. I was wondering if you've found evidence for the luxury effect but you may have answered that question indirectly in the final one where I think it was something like the patterns aren't clear w richness/abundance?

Sandra Diaz' talk at #BES2025 was one of the best keynote's I've seen. She managed to weave art, storytelling, and cutting-edge interdisciplinary functional trait ecology together to show us the importance of connecting with people when we do our science. A great start to the conference!

Just learnt a new concept and phrase - the "circular seabird economy", and love it. This is economy in the true sense, related to ecology and real world *limited* resources (rather than imaginary, unlimited ones, what politicians and the rich people they serve have convinced us "economy" is).
