David Botstein passed away. I worked with him at Stanford for a few years in designing and teaching a course on "The Heart". My heart is heavy right now. He was a wonderful mentor.

Today is #RareDiseaseDay & we are celebrating by highlighting the invaluable work of the Undiagnosed Diseases Network (UDN)! Formed in 2020, it aims to solve the most challenging medical mysteries using advanced technologies. In this thread, we will highlight their use of the #zebrafish model. 1/5 π§ͺ

Gift link from the NYT story about Axel and Epstein. When I was at Columbia he ran a lab where sexual harassment of women was business as usual. We all knew. We all warned each other.

I understand why chatbot cheating happens but every time I read about it I want to gently remind everyone that the point of schoolwork is not for the submission to exist. Teachers are not just greedy for more essays or solved equations. The point is to do the work WITH YOUR OWN BRAIN, FOR LEARNING.
24.02.2026 19:37 β π 3708 π 862 π¬ 100 π 49There is no sense in which a chatbot can "help" with your schoolwork by making it easier; if it is easier, it is less useful for actual learning (effortful practice is HOW WE LEARN) and therefore the chatbot has not helped, but has only hindered.

It is also traumatic for those who utter them. Tourette Syndrome is a genetic neurodevelopmental disorder that begins in childhood and is characterized by involuntary movements and sounds called tics. Of the millions of individuals living with Tourette Syndrome and Tic Disorders, approximately 10% experience coprolalia: the involuntary vocalization of obscene or socially inappropriate words or phrases. Coprolalia occurs in response to the social context of a situation, and individuals often report ticcing βthe worst thing at the worst time.β Importantly, these vocal tics are not reflective of the beliefs or values of the person experiencing them. The public discourse surrounding this moment underscores the continued need for greater awareness and understanding of Tourette Syndrome. We encourage the public to approach this moment with empathy and a commitment to learning, understanding, and inclusion. Every day, the Tourette Association of America supports and advocates for individuals and families with Tourette Syndrome in their schools, workplaces, and lives.
